Responsible Reporting on Dealing with the Past and Media Challenges in Kosovo

July 2026

PIPS has published a new policy brief titled “Responsible Reporting on Dealing with the Past and Media Challenges in Kosovo”, authored by Besian Beha and peer reviewed by Korab Krasniqi.

The brief explores the important role of the media in shaping how society understands conflict, the violent past, justice processes, victims, perpetrators, and the broader meaning of reconciliation. In post-conflict societies such as Kosovo, reporting on gross human rights violations, transitional justice, and dealing with the past remains one of the most sensitive and demanding areas of journalism.

Through editorial choices, selection of topics, use of sources, language, and framing, the media directly influence public narratives and social attitudes toward justice and peacebuilding. However, the brief emphasizes that journalists and media outlets in Kosovo operate in a complex environment marked by political pressure, social polarization, limited financial and professional resources, and a fragmented media market.

The paper argues that strengthening professional standards in reporting on transitional justice is essential for increasing public trust in both the media and justice processes. More responsible, ethical, and informed reporting can contribute to a healthier public discourse, support dialogue between communities, and promote long-term reconciliation in Kosovo.

This publication was produced as part of the project “Building Bridges of Accountability: The Path to Reconciliation II” implemented by PIPS. The publication was produced with the financial support of the European Union. Its contents are the sole responsibility of PIPS and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union.

Prishtina Institute for Political Studies (PIPS) - Organisational Strategy 2025-2030

The Prishtina Institute for Political Studies (PIPS) presents its Organizational Strategy 2025–2030 at a critical moment for Kosovo’s democratic development. Amid growing political polarization, social fragmentation, and geopolitical uncertainty, the strategy reaffirms PIPS’ role as a trusted, independent platform for political education, dialogue, and leadership development.

Building on over two decades of experience and a strong alumni network of more than 700 young professionals, PIPS will focus on strengthening inclusive leadership, fostering collaboration across divides, and promoting constructive political dialogue. The strategy places particular emphasis on youth engagement, social cohesion, interparty dialogue, and evidence-based policymaking as key drivers for a democratic, peaceful, and inclusive Kosovo.

Through its flagship School of Politics, expanded alumni initiatives, and structured dialogue platforms, PIPS aims to counter polarization, support accountable governance, and contribute meaningfully to Kosovo’s European integration path over the next five years.
